How to Add a Row and Multiple Rows in Excel

In this article, you will learn how to insert single and multiple rows in Excel workbooks.

Method 1: Adding a new row in Excel using the ‘Insert’ function

Step 1: Select the row (to the top of which you wish to add a new row) by clicking on the row header

Step 2: Right-click on the row header and select the ‘Insert’ option

A row will be inserted at the top of the row selected in step 1.

Steps to follow while inserting a new row in Excel using the ‘Insert’ option

Method 2: Inserting a row in Excel using Keyboard Shortcuts

Step 1: Select the row (to the top of which you wish to add a new row) by clicking on the row header

Step 2: Using the keyboard, press and hold the “CTRL” (“Command” in case of Mac), “SHIFT” and “+ ” keys

A row will be added to the top of the row selected in step 1.

How do I quickly insert multiple rows in Excel?

Method 1: Adding multiple rows in Excel using the ‘Insert’ function

Step 1: The number of rows selected should be equal to the number of rows to be added to the top

For example: To add three rows to the top of row 4, select rows 4, 5 and 6.

Step 2: Right-click on the row header and select ‘Insert’

Three new rows will be inserted to the top of row 4.

Method 2: Inserting multiple rows in Excel using Keyboard Shortcuts

Step 1: Select the row (to the top of which you wish to add new rows) by clicking on the row header

Step 2: Press and hold the “CTRL” (“Command” in case of Mac) and “SHIFT” keys and repeat pressing the “+ ” key as many times as the number of rows to be added

For example: To add three rows to the top of row 5, select row 5 and press and hold the “CTRL”(“Command” in case of Mac) and the “SHIFT” key, and then press the “+” key three consecutive times. Three new rows will be inserted to the top of row 5.

Alternatively, you can follow the steps below.

Step 1: Select the rows (to the top of which you wish to add new rows) by clicking on a row header and then dragging the cursor to select consecutive rows

The number of consecutive rows selected should be equal to the numbers of rows you wish to add on top.

Step 2: Press and hold the “CTRL” (“Command” in case of Mac) and “SHIFT” keys and then push “+ ” key once

For example: To add four rows to the top of row 3, select rows 3 to 6 and press and hold the “CTRL”(“Command” in case of Mac) and the “SHIFT” key, and then press the “+” key once. Four new rows will be inserted to the top of row 3.
